How to write a brilliant bio for social media

Do you struggle to explain what you do in your social media bio?

It just never feels like there is enough space to explain all that you do and you trip over yourself trying to work out the best way to summarise what a difference you can make.

When I first started studying journalism at university, I was taught the best way to make sure your story covers all the important information is to follow the 5 W’s

  • Who?

  • What?

  • When?

  • Where?

  • Why?

And it recently occurred to me that this is a brilliant method to use when trying to create a succinct but informative bio.

How does that work? Let me talk you through it:

Who?

Who do you currently work with? Or who are you aiming to work with?

Whatever you do, please don’t say - ‘anyone’!

You need to make sure you define this as clearly as possible, so you can create the right content for your future clients and attract the right people into your online army.

So, for me, that would be: Service-led mums in business.

What?

What do you do? How do you help people?

Focus first on the results you give them, what is the outcome of them working with you?

For me, that is: Make social media less stressful and time-consuming.

I could take that further by including: Through planning workshops, training sessions, 1-2-1 coaching and bespoke support packages.

When?

This may not be relevant, but it can help people get to know a little more about you.

Perhaps you only work with clients in the evening, or on certain days of the week.

Or, you might want to include that you are flexible.

I wanted to portray that my goal is to make social media fit around their children.

So, for me, that is: Around their busy family life.

Where?

Again, this may not seem relevant, but it could also help you stand out from the crowd.

If you provide face-to-face events or your work is based on local clients, including the town or city you’re focused on is really key to attracting the right people.

Alternatively, you might like to highlight how you hold online events.

For me, that is mainly: Via monthly 60-minute sessions on Zoom.

Why?

Rather than why you do what you do, focus on your ideal clients when you answer this.

So, why do they need to book the service you’re offering?

My brilliant business coach, Samantha Jane Slater encourages us to think about the benefits of the benefits.

You’ve talked about what you do and what they get out of it, but what’s the next level to that?

For me, that is: Spend less time on their phones and more time focusing on their business and their families.

Now, let’s put all that together:

I show service-led mums in business how to make social media fit around their families and be less stressful and time-consuming through planning workshops, training sessions, 1-2-1 coaching and bespoke support packages, so they can spend less time on their phones and more time focusing on their business and their families.

There’s quite a lot of repetition there, so I’ll amend it to:

I show service-led mums in business how to make social media less stressful and time-consuming through monthly, 60-minute Zoom planning workshops, training sessions, 1-2-1 coaching and bespoke support packages, so they can focus more on their business and family.

Keep that for reference because it’s a great elevator pitch to use everywhere, but we need to reduce that even more to fit into your bio.

So, next we’re going to remove the least relevant parts.

For example, whilst it’s useful information I’m going to remove the ‘where’ section and the part where I went into more detail about ‘how’.

I show service-led mums in business how to make social media less stressful and time-consuming, so they can focus more on their growing business and family.

Boom!

I’d love you to use these ideas to help create your bio and share it with me in my Facebook group or on my Instagram.

One final thing, if your chosen platform is Instagram, there is a little more room available for characters, you might like to add bullet points or emojis to highlight the most important parts.

P.S This is something I enjoy covering in my social media audits.
